My Tenner’s Still Safe

June 4th, 2009 at 11:37 pm

Purnell’s resigned (who, you ask? The photoshop guy). Burnham might be next. And Milliband.

I suspect that Brown will attempt to put together a new cabinet for Monday. If he fails and cannot, he will call a General Election. My tenner is safe… I hope. I must admit, I’m glad I didn’t raise it to £100 now

UPDATE: Miliband and now Burnham (BBC) have denied they’re quitting the Cabinet, swearing fealty to Brown. Brown’s intentions are clear – he’s going to fight on and attempt to put a new Cabinet together.

That Brown is finished is undeniable. His authority his gone. That doesn’t mean he won’t still continue to be Prime Minister. He still has a majority in the House, he can still get legislation through and if he can get a Cabinet that isn’t constantly resigning then he’s, in effect, got no need to resign. If Labour starts polling below the Lib Dems for any extended period though, expect the PLP to begin to mutiny and that might be the final straw.

The real question is whether Brown has it in him to resign or whether he will choose to take the Labour Party with him.
