Linda Riorden MP’s Expenses (Halifax)

June 18th, 2009 at 9:23 am

I know, I thought! I’ll break my writers block by picking through a local MP’s expenses, available online today from the internet.

She claims the maximum £400 a month for food and £100 a month for a cleaner for her London flat. It’s all fairly prosaic and mundane really. The only unusual expense claim is a training course on how to give good speeches for the princely sum of £250 and she already confessed that to the local rag.

Yawn. Break my blogging block this will not.

Verdict: She likes her food and doesn’t like housework (I know, I know, most people hate food and love housework. What a freak!) but she’s not corrupt as far as I can tell. She’s just another backbench Labour non-entity, not even a hundredth of the person that her predecessor Alice Mahon was.

Writer’s Block

June 17th, 2009 at 12:25 am

Well, I use ‘writer’ in the loosest possible sense, but the end result is the same: I have nothing to say.

Update.

You know what it is? I’m sick to the back teeth of politics. I’m sick of politicians. Labour? Brown? How did I ever imagine, for a second, that they were worth writing about? Worth caring about? There’s got to be more to life than this, surely?

I’m simply overwhelmed. We live in a highly risk-averse society, full of fear and threats.  Liberty is to ‘normal’ people what leaving home is to a pre-teen. It’s not something to be looked forward to – it’s something to be dreaded and feared.

The majority doesn’t value liberty, they value security. They don’t value freedom – they value safety.

I accidently looked up at the mountain and now I don’t know what to write.

I thought I was trouble..

Conservative blogger Tory Bear, months after getting stuck in with gossip about Liberal Youth’s leadership election, has decided to close that particular chapter with an interview with the irrepressible Sara Scarlett, where he tries, unsuccessfully, to recruit her. She makes me feel like a party apparatchik, although she actually agrees with more Lib Dem policy than I do. “Go Figure” as the Americans say.

You can read the interview here. As a side note, it’s very revealing. It seems that young Conservatives are also counting on a new wave of more libertarian leaders and thinkers that’s just round the corner. I’m not sure that’s any more likely than it is in the Liberal Democrats, what with modern politics being highly interventionalist and managerial.

The challenge for all libertarians, whether they like it or not, in the Party system or not, is to engage with the political process and make it something that people want to vote for. Perhaps that’s where people like Sara come in. We’ve not seen the last of her, that’s for sure.

Platform the Bastards

June 8th, 2009 at 7:19 pm

BNP voters aren’t going to listen to me. I don’t blame them. But then, this message isn’t aimed at BNP voters. This is aimed at those of you still desperately clinging to the idea that No Platform is going to work.

As I write this, I’m listening to a live broadcast of a speech by bog-eyed slime ball fuck-wit Nick Griffin. I’m struck by the overwhelming sense that Nick is quite clearly a moron, that he’s just another politician like any other, promising truly atrocious policies presented in the sort of style more commonly associated with infomercials and tele-evangelism.

It’s obvious, isn’t it? The best way to ‘stop’ the BNP is to put this man on television and allow him to make people feel that same sense of queasy repulsion I felt.

You can’t really go around yelling, “BUT THEY’RE RASCIST” and expect that to have an effect on people who don’t give a shit about racism. You can’t go around yelling, “BUT THEY’RE FASCISTS!” and expect that to have an effect on people who don’t understand what fascism is, and you can’t go around yelling, “BUT THEY’RE NAZIS!” and expect people to believe something that sounds so fantastical and absurd.

Quite simply the best way to fight the BNP is to let people understand just how pathetically typical of bad politicians they really are. Platform the bastards. It’s the only way. Of course, if they try imposing their national socialist shit on me I’ll raise up a militia and have them exterminated like the vermin they are.

Just saying.

Dear Europe

June 7th, 2009 at 11:37 pm

We know that the last century was hell for much of Europe. Fascism, the doctrine that believes that what’s good for the State is what’s good for everyone, has caused so much death and pain, and I think most right thinking people would hope that it would go the way of Feudalism – consigned to the dustbin of history as a really bad idea.

Sadly we, the British, are sending a Fascist your way, mixing the charms of Nationalism, Xenophobia, racism and hardcore left wing economics.

It’s clear something’s gone horribly wrong with British politics. Perhaps it’s generations of people brought up to believe that the job of Government is to give them whatever they want, leaving the door wide open for parties like the BNP who promise exactly that.

Whatever the cause, I wish to offer my profound apologies and express my sincere embarrassment and shame at raising the spectre of Fascism in Europe once again.

Regards,

Charlotte
