Right, there’ll be more on this subject soon – if you’re a Leeds resident you already know the problem – The bin men are on indefinite strike because they don’t like the idea of having their pay equalised with other council workers of equivalent skill.
Things are getting nasty: the bin men getting more militant and emboldened (threatening phone calls, hate campaigns, rubbish being dumped on people’s doorsteps) and the taxpayers, who pay money to the council to have their bins taken away are getting shafted. Strike breakers are having their windows smashed, too. It’s all gone a bit 70s.
I’m getting in touch with the people involved to write more about this, but in the meantime I’m drawing attention to a new Facebook group: Leeds Tax Payers against the Bin Strike. If you live in Leeds and you want people to actually take your bins away, please join up and spread the word.
Thanks!
UPDATE: Well, that’s interesting. Just had a phone call saying that informal talks have started (previously the unions had walked away and were refusing to talk).
Of course, the Council’s been softened up now. Are they desperate enough to massively increase the wages of all bottom level council workers to £22k a year, up from £14k? How many council workers will have to be made redundant to pay for that? How much will the Council Tax need to increase to pay for it? Taxpayers are going to lose badly on this one.
