I’m not going to try to cover this…

May 6th, 2010 at 9:39 pm

Yeah, I write a politics blog and I'm not even going to try...

If you’re looking for coverage, try the television. I can’t compete and I know it. I’m on Twitter as @charlottegore, blithering through the night if you’d like that though. Hold on to your hats…

Wanted to see this election summed up in graph form? Well now you can.

In the spirit of posting links and things, I got sent a link to a page created by people who run money.co.uk. I wouldn’t normally post this sort of thing, but they’ve done a pretty good job of summing up this election in graph form that I think it’s worth it. The feature is called, “Are we like lambs to the slaughter?

Of particular interest is the graph that shows the difference how much the Parties intend to reduce the deficit by, versus what cuts they’ve actually told us about… well worth a quick sneeky peek.

I’ve got another piece up on Comment Is Free here, which you might like. I’ve been thinking that what Libertarians like me want is a limited Government (not simply a ‘small’ Government)… and it occurs to me that a Hung Parliament, which puts an end to the ability of Majority Governments to bulldoze populist, authoritarian legislation through, sounds pretty good to me.

This Blog and Labour

Stating the obvious

A quick note to state what I hope is obvious: Writing about Brown and Labour seems like a bit of a waste of time now and so I’m not really going to be bothered doing it.

If they win the election or end up in a coalition with the Liberal Democrats then, sure, they’ll be worth writing about again… but for now? Seriously, who cares what the hell Labour says or does during this campaign? Even using Government databases to help target election leaflets at cancer patients doesn’t surprise me – the first rule of campaigning is always Win First, deal with the consequences later.

Inevitably a change of Government will see a bit of a realignment of the whole political blogosphere (amongst other probably more important things that might happen). Libertarian bloggers, especially, are going to be unleashing hell on the Tories in much the same way they’ve been unleashing hell on Labour. The left wing blogosphere will no doubt be energised and renewed by having a fantasy Labour Party to campaign on behalf of instead of the reality… it’s a whole new dawn for them and I’m sure they’re looking forward to it enormously.

What’ll become of the Tory blogosphere? Can’t wait to find out.

So if I’m suddenly being a lot tougher on the Tories it’s simply because what they do and say suddenly matters a lot more now, and it would be profoundly wrong and stupid of me to give them the benefit of the doubt that I refused to give Labour. I’m sure, given the choice of ‘Being in Government and getting snarked at by Charlotte Gore’ versus ‘Being in opposition and Brown getting snarked at by Charlotte Gore’ they’d prefer the former. I’m not quite that formidable and important just yet.

Election Campaign Daily – 8th April

Daily Summary from your apathetic blogging friend

The gist: Today they’ve been bickering about the tiny differences in how much they’re going to raise taxes by. Labour say Tories are living in a fantasy world. Lib Dems have said the Tories are going to put up VAT. The Tories say Labour’s looking rattled.

Tories decided it would be funny to piss everyone off by announcing a plan to bring back some sort of compulsory volunteering for kids, because that plan was such a resounding winner for Labour when they announced it over a year ago.

Who’s won? Well in this game no-one wins, there’s only degrees of not losing. However, the National Service announcement from the Tories makes them today’s losers from my point of view, and the Lib Dem’s scaremongering about VAT probably means Labour’s actually won. Hard to tell who really benefits from Lib Dem negative campaigning, but I suspect ‘not the Lib Dems’.

Report ends.
